Last Chance U

Post by lastcat3 »

Anybody who is a fan of football should definitely check this out regardless if you prefer pro or college as it is very well made. It's currently on netflix streaming and gives a very in depth view of the realities of Junior College football. Only negative I could say about it is that I do have a feeling that some of the coaches on the field antics may have been set up a bit for the camera to make some of the episodes feel more dramatic . Getting into a pushing and shoving match with a refereee and things like that.

A "reality" show with manufactured drama? Nah, you've got to be kidding. :D

That was one cool thing about the 'Hard Knocks' series though is that they didn't seem to put in any 'artificial' drama. At least not from what I could see. Generally the drama they used was seeing if this particular guy would make the team or not.

I watched it the week it came out on netflix. Agree that it's very well made.

As Sullivan pointed out, reality TV is rarely "real", so I'm sure some things were hammed up for the documentary but probably not as much as one would guess. JUCO football in those parts really is crazy. Whatever word you want to use, an "outlaw" or "renegade" conference. The show was basically par for the course for how it really is.

Even over on this side of the country, so many of the personalities - coaches and players - reminded me of my short stint in JUCO ball. I laughed to myself a bunch of times throughout the series. Only difference was talent level and that I was downtown in a major city and not in the middle of nowhere. Attitude and the way the coaches and players were, even as students for the latter, pretty much sums up JUCO players. Wherever they play. Have two close friends - and former teammates - who played JUCO ball in California before moving on to 4-year schools. They found it to be similar, as well. Oh, and none of us had a Ms. Wagner (star of the show). My school's 'athletic advisor' was a miserable old lady.

There is - or was, I watched it a while ago - a program about Mississippi JUCO football on Amazon Prime also. Wouldn't recommend for anyone looking to be entertained, but if you're a football fan ... At least to me, it's all "must watch".

I heard Clint Trickett is in this. If so, then I'm definitely tuning in at least for his segment.

QB Coach ... He also was the goto coach when there was a problem at the school.

I liked how he played football, wish his career hadn't ended. I think he'll have a solid coaching career though. Not quite a Ken Dorsey 'born to be a coach' type, but next tier down is how I thought of him.
