Small doesn't necessarily mean terrible. Both Widener and Milton performed respectably at their own level of competition during Johnson's and Krieg's tenure there.

Paul Hornung ... his senior year, in which he won the Heisman, Notre Dame went 2-8.

Fred Smerlas played for the 0-11 Boston College Eagles in 1978 then was drafted in 1979 with the 32nd overall pick by the Buffalo Bills.
