I was reading an article by Dave Brady of the Washington Post on the 1977 Dorsett trade. He notes a first round pick (No. 14) had gone from San Diego to Dallas in the Clint Longley trade (1976). Huh?
Can this be right? Tom Prothro was a bright guy with an interesting background as his sometime bridge partner was Omar Sharif, his uncle was a Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. and his father was a manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Why would he send any high draft pick to Dallas for a player they had to get rid of after he attacked Roger Staubach in 1976? He also had that Dan Fouts fellow. Does anyone know if Prothro did in fact trade a first round selection for Clint Longley?

Chargers got Clint Longley and Dallas's 1977 first round pick (#24)
Cowboys got a 1977 first round pick (#14) and a 1977 second round pick (#41)
So, the swapped 1st rounders and Dallas gained 10 spots and got a 2nd rounder. Using today's draft value chart it is a high price for Longley. Dallas unloaded those picks and more to Seattle to get Tony Dorsett.
Dan Fouts had not shown a ton from 1973-75, though he did lead NFL in yards per completion in 1974, they had a new OC (Bill Walsh) and a new WR (Charlie Joiner) . .. in 1975 Fouts regressed some, go sacked a lot... but the trade did yield in today's terms a net late 1st rounder
