Another odd scheduling question

Post by MatthewToy »

I've been watching old Bears highlights and saw a couple things. They played the Broncos both in 83 and 84 in Soldier Field. They also played Philly twice in 83. Anybody know why?

All three teams finished in fifth place in 1982, and the AFC West teams faced NFC Central teams in 1984. Both Denver and Chicago finished in third in 1983.

In the 28 team NFL, the four fifth place teams played their fellow conference doormat twice, and the other conference's doormats once each. Denver and Baltimore played each other twice, and Chicago and Philly once each. The 5's had eight games against their division-mates, and two games against the other divisions in the conference.

There were some scheduling oddities in 1977-78 as well with the advent of the new 16 game scheduling formula in ''78. The Jets played at Philadelphia both years and the Eagles did the same at New England. Including 1973, the Jets played at Philadelphia three times in six years.

The Rams also played in Cleveland in both 1977 and '78.
