In the second quarter of yesterday's game Cam Newton lateraled the ball to Ted Ginn who thought about
passing but didn't and ran the ball but did not reach the line of scrimmage.
It was ruled a sack.
When a quarterback hands off to a running back who loses ground on the play
is that also ruled a sack? If not, why was the Ginn play a sack?

If there is judged to be a motion to pass, then it is a sack, judgment call per Seymour SiwoffJohn Grasso wrote:In the second quarter of yesterday's game Cam Newton lateraled the ball to Ted Ginn who thought about

How many non-QB's have been sacked in a Super Bowl? The only one I can think of (before last Sunday) is the Fridge.

From the NFL Guide for Statisticians:
"When the quarterback or a teammate, makes an apparent attempt to pass at anytime before he or a teammate is tackled, steps out of bounds, or fumbles behind or at the statistical line of scrimmage, the play is scored as a sack and any yards lost attempting to pass. (Should he advance the ball across the statistical line of scrimmage, it is a rushing play.)"

According to pro football reference, Marcus Allen was sacked six times in his career, Steve Sewell four times, and Mike Garrett and Freddie Solomon three times, although I suspect Solomon's sacks came when he was actually under center in 1978.
