Re: Charlie or Charley Conerly?
In Perian (Charlie's wife) Conerly's book about Charlie and her life with him (Backseat Quarterback, avail at Amazon- 1963) She uses "Charlie". One would think she would know.

Re: David Woodley
The 1982 AFC Title Game was played in a driving rainstorm on a muddy Orange Bowl grass field. Woodley outperformed Richard Todd. Both were terrible but Woodley's passing was far less damaging to Miami than Todd's was to the Jets. Those conditions make it hard for anyone to pass well. . Link to PFR i...

Re: Why did Sam Wyche fare so poorly in Tampa?
It's because he came from Cincinnati, not Cleveland. (NE Ohio native here.)

Re: Penalty Flags
I once read that before penalty flags were introduced in the NFL (forget the year) the referees used to carry little bulbed horns and squeeze them when there was a penalty to be called. IDK if that is accurate or my memory is playing a trick on me, but if you are researching for a future book, it mi...

Re: NFL Controversial Plays Prior to 1960
The Chicago Cardinals victory over Milwaukee Badgers in 1925 59-0 against a team with some High School players on it would be insanely controversial today. And it's still in the record books as an official game.

Re: The Washington Football Team
Washington BUCKSKINS with a pioneer Davy Crockett / Daniel Boone motif like WVU has ("Mountaineers"). This would be after their 1969-70 farm team the Roanoke (VA.) Buckskins of the ACFL (before Pete Rozelle banned farm teams in 1970 or so. Big mistake too. Grow The Game !!!) My first choic...

Re: The 1998 Arizona Cardinals
The sole reason for the Playoff Bowl was to raise money for the players' pension fund. Once it was funded, the game was discontinued because it had fulfilled its purpose. I unfortunately can't cite a source for this but I recall reading that the NFL at that time regarded the game as being officiall...

Re: The 1998 Arizona Cardinals
In lieu of the passing of Vince Tobin, let's talk about this first Cardinals team to win a playoff game since the days of Trippi. Technically, the 1964 Playoff Bowl counted as a playoff game when it was played . I know the NFL later decided that the Playoff Bowl was an exhibition and took 2 wins aw...

Re: Alex Smith Future HOVG or Hall Of Feel Good Story?
Just checked him out on PFR.com and I think he should be a lock for the HOVG. Winning record with every team he played for. Rought start with SF but led them to a great season in his last year there. Fantastic 14-2 TD to Int ratio in playoffs. 3 Pro Bowl selections. 3 separate times got votes for Co...

Re: 1973 AFC playoffs had Denver won finale at Oakland?
It's too bad the NFL put OT rules in for television to try and control the length of games. I also would prefer a high possibility of a game ending in a tie. One thing I recall in that 1973 Denver-Oakland game (So long ago that the Broncos actually were wearing the best uniform they have ever fielde...
