I love what-if stuff like this. Thanks! As a Chargers fan, it would have been only slightly less brutal, losing to the Raiders in the divisional round instead of the AFC championship.

Overtime margin of victory
The overtime rules for playoff games (each team gets a possession) got me thinking about the possible margins of victory for overtime playoff games. It looks like all margins from 1 to 14, except 11, are possible. Here's a list, with an example for each (for some margins, there are several possibili...

Re: punts and drop kicks - rule change
I kept searching, and I found some newspaper articles that show that this change was made in 1991. Before then, punts and drop kicks could be done at any point on the field, during any kind of play. For example, you could receive a kickoff, run a bit, and then punt it to the other team. As of 1991, ...

Re: 1978 AFC West
and then the Oilers at the Astrodome in the finale, 45-24! Yes, not that they obviously needed it, end of day, but Houston still did have home-field in the Wild Card Game to play for. Interesting. Just for fun, let's switch the Holy Roller result (even under the rules at the time, the refs should h...

punts and drop kicks - rule change
I believe that, historically, punts and drop kicks could be done anytime - from beyond the line of scrimmage, or even on non-scrimmage plays. Then the NFL changed the rules (sometime in the past few decades) so that punts and drop-kicks have to be done from behind the line of scrimmage. Does anyone ...

Re: HOF QBs on the same team
Thanks, everyone, for catching the ones I missed. pro-football-reference.com doesn't have a position for Blanda for many of his seasons. So my stathead search missed Blanda-Luckman (48) and Blanda-Stabler (70-75) Otto Graham - Y.A. Tittle 1948 for a short time. Y.A. Tittle was signed by the Clevelan...

HOF QBs on the same team
Six times in history two future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks were on the same team. Three of the occurrences spanned multiple seasons. Don't count 'future' Hall-of-Famers (e.g., Favre & Rodgers in 2005-2007). Can you name them? The answer is below. It's hidden as invisible text - to re...

Re: Best TD Celebration Spikers in NFL History
I wouldn't necessarily call Elmo Wright's the best, but it certainly was distinctive.

'72 Dolphins - critical play?
I was watching a DVD of an old "This Week in Pro Football" show from 1972, and an incident from a week 3 game caught my eye. It was arguably one of the most important plays in enabling the Miami Dolphins to go undefeated that season. Interestingly, a) the 3rd down play came up short of a f...
