Re: Earl Morrall in 1968-Baltimore Colts

That is a find. I had never seen those photos before. And they are identical. I have just spent a half hour on Newspapers.com and there is no mention of any AFL winners of the Best Bell Award/Trophy by the Maxwell Club. There are articles about Unitas and Beban in 1967, Kelly and Simpson in 1968, a...

Re: Earl Morrall in 1968-Baltimore Colts

There was no NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in 1968 but I have to think Earl Morrall would have won that as well (he did win it in 1972). A strong case could have also been made for Bill Nelsen who finished 3rd in the NFL MVP voting behind Morrall and Leroy Kelly. Makes sense---and it i an o...

Re: Weirdest Teams of All Time

The most insane line would happen during a surprising 30-7 trouncing of the 7-1 Bears at home. Flutie went 6/18 165 yards 4 td's 0 int Jim McMahon was injured in the second quarter and would never play in another regular season game for Chicago. Mike Ditka called it "the worst game for the Bea...

I thought Ray Scott did a great job narrating the syndicated NFL Game of the Week episodes from 1972-1974. I believe he was replaced in by Harry Kalas in 1975.

Re: 1970 Monday Night Football & All in the Family

IIRC, the first episode of "All in the Family" opened with a shot of Archie watching a pro football game on TV. In one of the early episodes Archie mentions Alvin Haymond's 98 yard kickoff return touchdown (Rams vs. Cardinals 9/18/70). He has plans to watch NFL highlights but is upset bec...

Re: 40th anniversary article about the Elway trade

Based on what I've read and watched, I don't think that's an accurate assessment of the Elway-near trade. What happened was: the Raiders needed another 1st round draft pick to send to Baltimore to meet Accorsi's price. Chicago had two first round draft picks in 1983, and the Raiders went after one ...

Re: Bill Nelson went to Cleveland-Browns were 10-4

Nelson had two fantastic seasons.  He did virtually nothing after 1970 that but still  put his signature on Cleveland Browns history. Nelsen went 9-4 as the Browns starting QB in 1971, directing them to the AFC Central Division title. One of the highlights was a 14-13 win over the defending Super B...

Re: 40th anniversary article about the Elway trade

Elway nearly became a Raider: Sunday, October 29, 2006 BY PAUL NEEDELL Star-Ledger Staff John Elway a Raider? According to two people with knowledge of a potential pre-draft trade, the Colts had reached a deal to send the No. 1 pick of the 1983 draft to the Raiders -- only to have the deal blocked b...

Re: 40th anniversary article about the Elway trade

Thanks for posting the link, that was quite a series of events. I lived in Colorado at the time and the Elway hype was everywhere. Edgar Kaiser was a genius. All the pieces had to fall into place and they did (thank you Bob Irsay). I certainly don't blame Elway for not wanting to play for Frank Kush...
