Re: All-Star team of players who played semi-pro football

Of course the fact that this was put together in 1980 explains the absence of Joe Klecko, who at that point was only in the fourth season of his Hall of Fame career. Klecko played for the Aston Green Knights in the Seaboard Football League in 1972, and was listed in the program as Jim Jones from Pol...

Re: All-Star team of players who played semi-pro football

This is an interesting topic close to my heart. Here are a couple of players who are also candidates to at least be part of the discussion. C: Carl Mauck, Harrisburg Capitol Colts, 166 games TE: Bob Tucker, Pottstown Firebirds, 156 OG: Conway Hayman, Hagerstown Bears, 77 P: Duane Carrell, Hagerstown...

Pittsburgh Area Semi-Pro Football Team

I have a friend whose dad played for a Pittsburgh-area semi-pro football team called the PV Smilers in 1948, and I'd be interested to know if anyone has heard of them (league, home field, years played, etc.). Thanks.

Chuck Foreman

I'd be interested in the group's thoughts on Chuck Foreman's chances of making the Hall of Fame. Today his hometown newspaper the Frederick (MD) News-Post just ran a story about his renewed efforts to be considered, which is what prompted my question, since I grew up in Frederick too. The closed com...

Re: Joe Thomas with 49ers

I think I remember reading somewhere that Thomas destroyed all of the 49ers team memorabilia. Am I remembering correctly? If so, sad story bordering on tragic.

Semi-Pros in the Super Bowl

Here's a list of former semi-pro players who went on to play or coach in the Super Bowl. I compiled it for my Semi-Pro Football History FB group, and thought it might interest this audience too. Semi-pro records are spotty at best, so I'd be interested to hear any errors or omissions. Mike Bass (Det...

At a time when SI is a shadow of its former self, this article was some nice work. Here's a link: https://www.si.com/nfl/2024/01/29/count ... washington

NFL's Most Influential Teams

The February edition of Sports Illustrated arrived today, and one of the articles was a list of the 50 most influential NFL teams (single season). I thought the group might be interested in hearing their top 10: 10) 1961 Green Bay Packers 9) 2001 New England Patriots 8) 1946 Los Angeles Rams 7) 1974...

Re: What happened to Pro Football Archives?

Is there any update on if/where the Pro Football Archives data might land so interested researchers can continue to access it?
