Aug 20 or Sep 17?

The HOF lists Sep 17, 1920 as the birth of the NFL but many online sources say Aug 20, 1920 instead. Is there a definitive answer?

Re: Depictions of Football in American Cinema

If you want to watch a historically accurate football movie 'We are Marshall' would probably be the one you would want to go for. 'Friday Night Lights' is fairly accurate also. As is usually the case, "Friday Night Lights" the book (by Bissinger) was much better (and more accurate) than t...

I got the same response. I asked if he had an estimated return date. If he responds, I'll post it.

Franchise Tag: A Visual History The Kansas City Chiefs 1958-

I found an online ebook version of this history of the Chiefs: https://issuu.com/matt.brimicombe/docs/brimicombe_franchisetag_ It's 56 pages long and very nicely done. I also found that you can save each page as a hi-resolution jpg thusly: https://image.isu.pub/160403051308-0e49b4ff9e2367f9fa4a23037...

Re: Updated bibliography now available

Ralph, did the NFL publish a 25-year history of the league in 1944? I know there was a war going on, which may explain why I haven't found anything. Or maybe I'm using the wrong search terms. I'm wondering if there was anything comparable to the 50th and 75th anniversary books. I'm looking forward t...

Re: Ball changes?

I remember in the pre-merger years the announcers and press made mention of the fact that there was an AFL ball and an NFL ball, and I seem to remember for the Super Bowl they'd used the NFL ball when the NFL was on offense and the AFL ball when the AFL was on offense. I found some history regardin...

Re: 1960 NFL Expansion Draft

Thanks, Tod. Does my reasoning seem accurate to you? That teams froze 25 players, and Dallas could choose from the remainder, whether active or inactive? Yes. I read someplace (of course I can't remember where) that each time Dallas made a selection of an unprotected player, that player's team coul...

Thanx -- I should have guessed someone would have thoroughly researched the question and already written a full-blown article on it!

Re: 1953 NFL Draft "Lottery Bonus Pick"

OK I kept looking and found this:

I had no idea the NFL awarded a lottery pick for as long as it did. So what was the motivation behind starting the system, and why did it end?
