Re: A 6-year HOF plan, just wow

Why is Leroy Butler never in this conversation? A 4-time first team All-Pro (to 2 for Lynch, 2 for Atwater, and 3 for Browner) and a member of the all-90s team, along with Atwater (Lott and Carnell Lake are on the second team). he could also cover well, played some CB and could blitz, same with Lak...

Re: passer rating

Plum was the ultimate choke artist. He couldn't complete passes when the game was on the line. In fact, in crucial moments, he looked like Mickey Sasser trying to throw the ball back to the pitcher. Didn't Alex Karras want to hit him for blowing the 1962 game in Green Bay? That story's been bandied...

A lot like modern day Alex Smith, who some tout as an uber-efficient game manager based on his stats...

Re: If Eli retires now (Canton?)

I always thought James had it right in his first Historical Abstract when he had two lists, one for peak value and one for career value. If you are concerned with how Terrell Davis rates among the great running backs, you are talking about his peak value, and in this respect he probably ranks at or...

Re: If Eli retires now (Canton?)

And that is essentially all that current advanced football sites/blogs do. I'd argue that those types aren't even in the business of trying to get the best result and they're just profiting off the sport and the casual fans ignorance. But I don't want to insult any of the advanced stats guys, at le...

Re: If Eli retires now (Canton?)

To folks who judge players by the numeric patterns they discern in their exhaust fumes, I imagine they do seem strange. Let's discuss. We're talking about J.J. Watt? Of the Houston Watts, er, Texans? You know, that team comprised of nothing but J.J. Watt, he of the "let's make fun of Zach Mett...

Re: If Eli retires now (Canton?)

Some players just have a way of stepping up at crucial times or making their teammates better. Recent examples: Reggie White made the whole team better by his presence; JJ Watt really doesn't. Randy Moss was phenomenal but never really made his team better outside of his production; Steve Smith cou...

Re: Mike Shanahan, HoFer?

I'd never heard of the "toxic reputation." It seems like the criticisms of Shanahan are more circumstantial. Being fired by Al Davis' itchy trigger may be, in hindsight, a badge of honor, and he certainly got his revenge on Davis later, beating him like a nit infested Persian rug. Regardin...
