Re: A Vikings/Broncos Super Bowl XXII

Maybe they win one of those without that albatross hanging over them? Maybe. Also, maybe they don't choke the next year when they got off to a real good start. If anything, you'd think the Saints would not have started 7-1 in '88 due to a possible bad taste in their mouths from that Viking blowout....

Re: Joe Gibbs' 3 Super Bowls- a great achievment or an asterisk?

What happens if you replay the entire 1991 season, but that season's Giants, Forty Niners, and Bills are each replaced with the exact 1990 versions instead? And instead of the actual '91 Cowboys, you have next year's exact version instead?? I can't imagine it "written in stone" that Washin...

Re: A Vikings/Broncos Super Bowl XXII

I haven't mentioned the Saints yet. It's tough for me to invite them into this hypothetical with that 44-10 egg they laid in that Wild Card game. A great 10-2 non-scab regular season they had in that inaugural playoff year of theirs. Despite '87 being another strike year, I was excited over their s...

Re: A Vikings/Broncos Super Bowl XXII

Everyone seems to be on the Vikings' side here, but John Elway was the league MVP (admittedly undeserved over Jerry Rice) and the Vikings were only 8-7 in the regular season. I think the Vikes' magic had to run out at some point, and unless Anthony Carter went off like he did against San Francisco,...

Re: Rank all twenty SB-participants of the '70s

How good are the 1962 Packers in your opinion? Not far at all beneath the '75 Steelers. Just beneath the '78 Steelers. https://profootballresearchers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6516 https://www.profootballresearchers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=56442&sid=781d850125bd0d4af259641834722174#p56442 htt...

Re: Rank all twenty SB-participants of the '70s

Yes, I treat the '75 Steelers as a one-loss team. I think they are the best team of the modern era. Just imagine if their special teams was just a bit better? Just imagine if their special teams was MORE THAN just a bit better?? I haven't said it yet, but comparing both "for their era, adjusti...

Re: Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

I will agree, had the 49ers not made the playoffs in 1988, Walsh might have been fired, and not co-written two influential football books. Then again, maybe he still would have, questioning his possible handling of the "quarterback controversy" starting with his benching of Joe Montana du...

Re: Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

With the 88 49ers, my what-if is different: They were two miracle plays (Hail Jerry, Young's crazy run) from 4-7 What if they lose those Giants/Vikings games? Even at 8-8/9-7, they'd have missed out entirely How differently do the 88 playoffs play out with no SF? if they lost those games, they woul...

Re: AFC teams that just missed the playoffs in 1989

Allowing the top 10 of the 14 in the conference to play in a tournament (CFL style) isn't the worst thought or idea ever. More like... NBA -style considering the current play-in tournament going on the past few years! If we apply this to the AFC in 1989, this is what we would have had... Play-in ro...

Re: Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

Interesting take, Wolf, on thinking that had Young played instead in the '88 playoffs against Minnesota or especially in the night Chicago tundra that each case may have been a totally different story than what actually did happen with Joe under center. As I said, its hard to flip two lopsided wins ...
