Re: Great college football teams from the 1930's-50's & the
I recall a Jeff Davis (??) biography of George Halas; a passage about Johnny Lujack. Lujack had enjoyed early success in professional football, but an arm or shoulder injury left him hampered throwing the ball in 1950. He threw 4 TD's and 21 INT's (yet, according to PFR, he made his first Pro Bowl??...

Re: ARCHIVE SB MVP's that could/should have been Started by
MVPs that should have been... and these are games that I remember thinking immediately after the game that these guys should have won it. XXXVII: Simeon Rice (I think he got screwed because I believe they had the voting BEFORE his 2nd interception) I agree that Rice would have been a worthy MVP cho...

Re: ARCHIVE SB MVP's that could/should have been Started by
In Super Bowl XVI, Montana won the MVP award despite throwing for just 157 yards, one TD pass and one TD run. He basically just had three long drives in the first half, leading to a 17-0 lead, and a 22 yard pass in the 4th quarter while up 20-14. That was about it. I can't think of another worthy ca...

Re: The Holy Roller
Huh, for years, I always "knew" that the Holy Roller play occurred on 4th down. I don't know where I got that from. I most likely read it in a less than reputable source, and accepted it as gospel. I just look through various sources and couldn't find anything about what down it was, so I'...

Re: Hypothetical Coaching Question
John Madden. I would want to win, and Madden did plenty of that, but I wouldn't want to be miserable at work every day. Lombardi's players didn't have many good things to say about him while playing for him (although they usually did afterwards.) Tom Landry maintained a frustrating emotional distanc...

Re: The Holy Roller
I doubt Stabler was trying to throw the ball away. It was 4th down. A sack or an incomplete pass both result in turnover on downs. I agree about Casper, though. He was likely just trying to,scoop up the ball but couldn't get a clean grip on it. No sense falling on the ball until he was in the end zo...

Sabol and George Young are the only worthy HOF picks from that list.

When you curve the performances, accounting for the different eras, Tittle's game is a clear cut #1. If you just take the numbers at face value, I still give Tittle a very slight edge.

Re: TOP QBs of TODAY
He is the only QB to have multiple 500 yard games. If you had told that to someone during his rookie year, you would have gotten some strange looks.

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions
This thread took an interesting turn. I see JohnH's point. The only thing I disagree with is including the Steelers team from the 1970's to the present day. The Steelers had a definite dropoff during the final 12 years of Chuck Noll's regime. That's too long a period to call it a dynasty. That's why...
