Re: Historic catches that wouldn't be catches today
In consecutive Dallas-SF matchups in 1995 (including the 1994 NFC title game) the 49ers overwhelmed the Cowboys with an early scoring barrage, fueled by Dallas turnovers. In each game, Michael Irvin caught a pass, was immediately hit, and fumbled. In the NFC Championship, SF scored on the subsequent...

Re: Leslie O'Neal
What do you remember about this forgotten sack artist? Great technician, used hands and body control very well, had all the moves. Knee injury slowed him, but recovered. But was also not beloved by his coaches. The term "locke room lawyer" was applied to him. No idea if it was deserved or...

Re: PFHOF Finalists
If I was guessing tonight who they will select I'd guess; Bettis, Brown, Dungy, Seau and Warner to go with Mick and both 'contributors' ... Who I'd probably pick (from the list of 15): Davis, Harrison, Pace, Seau and Shields. Yes on Tingelhoff and I'm not really big on having the 'contributors' cat...

Re: They Picked Up the Flag!
It's certainly very bothersome that one official thought it was face guarding, which is against the NCAA rules but not the NFL rules, although it used to be. I don't blame the mixed- crew factor for the non-call. I do blame that for the poor communication where they picked up the flag AFTER announc...

Re: Coaches That Were Fired After Winning Super Bowls
Jimmy Johnson said years later he was planning to leave and had written the resignation date on a list or calendar. However, Jerry Jones rushed those plans at a hotel bar during league meetings. Johnson was drinking with Norv Turner and some people Jones had fired. Jerry raised a toast and was chill...

Re: Pass Catching Streaks
TBH, I'm a bit surprised that a streak continues if a player misses a game. It makes me wonder .... did DiMaggio miss any games during his famous 56-game hitting streak? If he had missed a game, would the streak have continued or would it have ended? I always wondered about that as well. Rice misse...

Re: Teams that were ahead scoring on the last play
If teams don't want to offend their opponents or risk injury then why don't the rules allow the game to be ended by the referees upon mutual consent of the teams - similar to a technical knockout in boxing ending the contest. That's an interesting idea. Supposing, for a moment, that-- using the exc...

Re: Pass Catching Streaks
Interesting. The question now is, why should Alworth's streak be considered any more legitimate than Hutson's? Apparently, it shouldn't be. I had never heard of that. Pro Football Chronicle has game by game stats for 40 offensive players; they listed Alworth as DNP for that game. Pro Football Refer...

Re: Teams that were ahead scoring on the last play
I'll have to check up on this, but I think it was on the last play of the game during the 1979 Seahawks-Raiders game that Jim Zorn threw a touchdown pass to Sherman Smith despite already being up by 20-10. In 1987, the Eagles led Dallas 30-20 and were running out the clock when Randall Cunningham s...

Re: Pass Catching Streaks
I don't know offhand how far the NFL goes with this kind of statistic. I know years ago there was a record I believe first attributed to Don Hutson that Lance Alworth supposedly* broke for catching passes in consecutive games. Jerry Rice ran this record to a very high number. Problem is, in todays ...
