Re: NFL Defenses that allowed 14 PPG or less in a season

If you omit the four touchdowns the 1969 Vikings gave up via turnovers or special teams returns, their points surrendered per game falls to 7.5.

Re: 1974 NFL season - expectations, retrospect...

The Packers mathematically had a shot after week 11, but their locker room was so divided that it was never going to happen. The dissension came home to roost the following Sunday when they turned the ball over six times and were beaten 36-14 by an Eagles team that had lost six in a row.

Re: Don Shula's Best Teams

For what it's worth, per Pro Football Reference, the 1973 Dolphins' strength-of-schedule rating was -0.47, with 0.0 being average (the lower the number, the easier the schedule). The 1972 team's was -4.27, by far the easiest in the NFL.

Re: Don Shula's Best Teams

Haven't a number of players who were on both teams said that the '73 squad was better than the 17-0 group? Maybe that's anecdotal, but the '73 team had a notably tougher schedule and dominated its post-season opponents in a way the '72 team didn't.

Re: 2025 Obituaries

Former Packers tackle Steve Wright (who also spent time with the Giants, Redskins, Bears, and Cardinals) died June 1 at age 82.

Fun fact: Wright was the model for the statue that now accompanies the NFL's Man of the Year award.

Re: Most boring NFL season?

I was always surprised to read about how bad of a game Super Bowl V supposedly was because growing up watching Super Sunday the NFL Films clip made it out to be a pretty epic game, a Super Bowl comes down to the last second field goal that's pretty high drama. Then the aftermath with Lilly's record...

Re: 1982 NFL season - expectations as well as retrospect

The Packers had their chances to sneak by Dallas. Stenerud missed a PAT that would have made it 23-20 Dallas early in the 4th quarter, and they ended up chasing that point the rest of the game. In the 3rd, Green Bay had also reached the Dallas 15 and 16, but had to settle for field goals both times.

Re: Least experienced QB corps ... ones with fewest wins going into season

Dickey's recovery was hampered by a number of factors, some of which were due to the incompetence of the doctors treating him. His injury was horrific, but he shouldn't have been out of commission for two entire years.

Re: Least experienced QB corps ... ones with fewest wins going into season

My immediate thought was the 1978 Packers … if you don’t count Lynn Dickey, who wasn’t active that season. But I forgot that Bobby Douglass was on that team. Douglass wasn't acquired until the season had already started, so the Packers' quarterbacks going into the first game were Whitehurst (two ca...

Re: Joe Gibbs' 3 Super Bowls- a great achievment or an asterisk?

I'm eager to hear how a 14-2 team that routed its three playoff opponents by an average score of 34-14 -- and that had playoff wins the season before and the season after -- can be considered a fluke.
