My upcoming book on Walter Eckersall

Hello, I'm a longtime PFRA member and a former Nelson Ross Award winner (2019, for "War Football: World War I and the Birth of the NFL"), but a rare visitor to these boards. Some of you may be interested in my upcoming book, "Eckie: Walter Eckersall and the Rise of Chicago Sports,&quo...

Re: PFRA Awards

Thank you so much for the honor! The fact that I finally got "War Football" published after 15 years of trying was reward enough, but the Nelson Ross Award confirms that this was a story worth telling. Congrats also to Ryan (I loved your CC article!) and to the late Rupert. Looking forward...

Podcast on World War I and the Birth of the NFL

With the #NFL100 season about to kick off, I appeared on the Doughboy Podcast of the World War 1 Centennial Commission to talk about my new book, "War Football: World War I and the Birth of the NFL." PFRA members may be interested in this. My segment begins 22:30 into the podcast and lasts...

Re: George Halas and Norb Sacksteder

Excellent! I did come across the Halas-Clark postcard - "The Order of the Broken Jaw" - but ultimately decided not to use it in my book because when I scanned it, it came out pretty pixellated. I did use a really good mug shot of Halas from Illinois' 1917 football program; a picture of Hal...

Re: War Football

Thanks for noticing, James! I've been a PFRA member for some time now but just joined the Forums. I posted about War Football, along with a couple other new books by my publisher, today. Hope you read it, and hope you like it!

Re: George Halas and Norb Sacksteder

Hi, TanksAndSpartans...I researched Halas' early life and career fairly extensively for my recently published book, War Football: World War I and the Birth of the NFL. (I just posted about this, and a couple other books, in the Football Books section.) It's highly unlikely...in fact, impossible...th...

War Football-Red Grange-Pioneer Coaches

Hello all...I've been a PFRA member for a few years but am only now posting on the Forums for the first time. Just wanted to spread the word about a few new books about pro football history that were published this summer by Rowman & Littlefield. First off, and the one I'm most excited about, is...
