Re: NFL "what-if" scenarios thread

I stand by my opinion that the 91 Redskins were better than any Super Bowl champ that followed them, but you can definitely nitpick their schedule, that criticism is valid. I would add to it that the Lions they beat early in the season were playing without Barry, and the Falcons they beat early in ...

Re: Are the 1990 Giants underrated?

Was it? Washington was an offensive line and not much else, the Eagles were frauds, the Giants had no passing game, the Cardinals were the Cardinals. Dallas didn’t start winning until everybody else in the division aged in dog years. Should we base it on perception while ignoring their records? Is ...

Re: Are the 1990 Giants underrated?

I still stick by what I said- the 1990 Giants are overrated, not underrated. An easy schedule allowed this one dimensional over the hill gang to have one of the least impressive 10-0 starts in history That 49er game was basically all sizzle, no steak- a glorified punt bowl They played not to lose a...

Re: 1977 Steelers - Why was this a “down” year for the defense?

1977 Allowed 4 non offensive TDs vs 0 in 1976. 1977 did allow 375 more yards but the offense turned the ball over 18 more times.

btw - Overall scoring was down in 1977 17.2 vs 19.2 in 1976

Re: DB starting a full season at all 4 positions

Right the full season caveat is a hard one because during a certain era, left and right corner had some meaninging, in that the LCB was "supposed" to be better at run force, the RCB was supposed to be more of the "cover" guy -- in theory, that is .... like the LDE vs RDE. I foun...

Re: Joe Gibbs' 3 Super Bowls- a great achievment or an asterisk?

Tons of very good teams have missed the playoffs. Sometimes it's due to the existing playoff structure, other times due to intense competition in their division or conference. Context matters. Assigning a binary, arbitrary standard to it is counterproductive and silly. Especially back in the day in...

Re: Joe Gibbs' 3 Super Bowls- a great achievment or an asterisk?

Good teams don’t miss the playoffs. How good should teams with above the middle records in a more stacked or imbalanced conference be considered? I.e. they would've made the playoffs on the other side. You either make the playoffs or you don’t 1967 Colts and Chiefs? 1963 Raiders? They swept the 11-...

Re: Are the 1990 Giants underrated?

Besides the QB depth (being able to go to Hoss after Simms' injury), they did have good depth at RB with OJ, rookie Rodney Hampton, Lewis Tillman, and David Meggett. On defense, they did have backups like OLB Johnie Cooks and S Dave Duerson, but they weren't too deep on that side of the ball beside...
