Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

That's been the narrative for a long time (I thought it was correct, too) but you're right. Found the list of prelim guys from 1980.

Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

What strikes me though about Tyrer’s retirement is that articles reference it almost as if it were an afterthought. The headlines read “Dave Hill Announces Retirement” and then mentions that at the same press conference Tyrer said “he was quitting too.” I wonder if there were formal retirement paper...

Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

Thanks - I'll revisit it. A number of years ago I'd looked through the archives. It was quite recently that a voter supplied the information about his late add to retirement list. Not doubting you, simply verifying.

Hmm. Was aware of the prelim list after ‘81 but not ‘80. May I ask how you confirmed?

Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

Whats your take on Ray Lewis, SixtiesFan? Do you feel he should have been elected to the HOF? I felt--and still feel--he was an accomplice to murder but got full legal representation and private investigators from the Ravens. His buddies got away with it in self defense but do we really know what h...

Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

He was a finalist the first year of eligibility. While it notes "1981", Tyrer submitted his retirement so late in the year he retired that he wasn't considered in 1980. Regarding the "get out of jail free card" - it's the same thing as saying CTE is "an excuse." That's ...

Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

Making Darren Sharper the focal point may have been a crafty way to garner enough “no’s” for Tyrer to ensure the real goal was achieved - avoidance of a complex issue that requires admitting football played a role in the tragedy. Slippery slope arguments are simplistic and overdone but they play on ...

Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

This is the bylaw that im researching: “Off the field or away from the game contributions and/or situations (positive or negative) are not to be considered, and Selectors are prohibited from including them in presentations or discussions. If a Selector violates the above rule, he/she would be warned...

Re: Will Now Be The Time For Jim Tyrer?

The bylaws date back to 1963. Who would know about the origin of a particular bylaw? The original intent may tell us a lot. I’m not talking about what the bylaw says but what was the reasoning for creating it, who benefitted, who didn’t? What historians are still alive with that knowledge? And is ac...
