Re: Homer Jones-The First Celebrator

In between those 2 was KC WR Elmo Wright, who invented the wild dancing spike. He didn't stick around long enough to patent it though :D

Re: Half Back Pass Option Play

Andy Johnson of the NE Patriots deserves a mention. The former Georgia QB excelled at the halfback option, completing 7 of 13 for 4 TDs (all of them coming in 1981) in the regular season. He also had one in the postseason, a TD throw against the Houston Oilers in the 1978 Divisional Playoff Game. He...

Re: Super Bowl X Steelers should have Routed Cowboys

Still the most exciting Super Bowl from my youth. After years of one-sided games we finally got a contest that went down to the final gun. The Cowboys were in a rebuilding year with many new players on their roster and they overachieved. They matched up well with the Vikings and Rams in the postseas...

Re: 1963 Green Bay Packers-What Stopped the Champs

You have to wonder if Paul Hornung's season suspension for gambling (ironic now, isn't it?) was a deciding factor. Was his breakaway ability worth 1 game to the Packers? We'll never know.

Re: Wayne Fontes

Joe Schmidt was also the guy that told Garo Yepremian that soccer-style kicking would never catch on in the NFL and to take a hike. Bet he would have liked to have had Garo in that 1970 5-0 loss in Dallas!

Re: Horsecollars

Anyone familiar with Dick "NIght Train" Lane's necktie tackles? I'll take a horse collar over that any day!

Re: Who is your pick for 3rd-best Dallas Cowboys QB ever?

Since QBs seem to be measured on postseason results despite his losses in conference title games White played well in the divisional playoffs and got his team there. Of course the big comeback against the Falcons, on the road no less, in 1980 stands out. He would be my 3rd place vote.

Re: 1963 Packers Lose All Star Game-Lombardi Furious

Interesting that Glyn Griffing began his career in the first football game of the 1963 season in the College All-Star Game and then would sub for an injured Y.A. Tittle in the very last game of the season in the NFL Championship Game. That was his last appearance in an NFL game.

Re: The 1960s Boston Patriots

They lost a game to Denver in Boston in the rain late on a long pass to Al Denson. With 8 seconds remaining the Denver QB hoisted a long pass to Al Denson. The ball hit Boston DB Chuck Shonta in the chest and bounced into Denson's hands, and he got through 3 defenders for the winning score. That los...

Re: Replacing a Legend-Danny White in 1981

People may not recall but White also served as the Cowboys' punter and would occasionally throw a pass or take off and run from punt formation on 4th down. I don't recall him doing it in the postseason (Landry probably would have had a heart attack!) but when he did do it he was usually successful.
