Re: What are some memorable hold outs and the cause behind t
HOF Patriots guard John "Hog" Hannah and tackle Leon Gray held out at the start of the 1977 season after they felt the Patriots had reneged on promises to redo their contracts. They both missed the Patriots first four games and NE stumbled to a 9-7 record. Three years later RB Sam "Ba...

Best Service for Online Newspaper Research
I thought I would query everyone about the best service to use for doing research using archival newspapers. I have only limited experience in this area and was wondering if there was one service that encompassed a wide range of newspapers and didn't require a monthly subscription charge? Specifical...

Re: Johnny Unitas
If you check sports mags from the mid-1960s the big discussion was who was the top QB, Unitas or Starr? It drew a parallel for me to the Manning vs Brady talk that was the big debate for many years up until Manning's retirement. Unitas had all the statistics, Starr had all the titles. Starr addresse...

Re: unique final plays
Season finale of the 2000 season (12/24/00). Olindo Mare kicks a 49-yard FG to give the Dolphins an apparent 27-24 victory over the Patriots in New England. On the game's (first) final play, with a Drew Bledsoe fumble ruled an illegal forward pass the gun sounded. 35 minutes later it was ruled an in...

Re: When did the NFL peak for you?
One of the biggest factors helping kickers are the K-balls. Chris Bahr's son told him after attending a kicking camp that the new balls easily add 10 yards of distance to the kicks. Retired NFL kickers marvel at the distance today's kickers achieve, but I refuse to believe it is because their legs a...

Re: Hope this doesn't sound like a rant ...
Guys, try looking at it from this perspective. If you had gone a long journey with no TV and hadn't watched a football game since the early 80s and the first game you saw upon your return was that Vikings-Rams Thursday night game what would your reaction have been?? To me modern day football is gett...

Re: 10-6 or better teams to miss the playoffs
The year after that, both the 10-4 Dolphins & 9-5 Pats. My guess is if NE wins finale over Bert Jones’ Colts, they still don’t get in. Miami gets in instead, as AFC East winner, due to better division record (6-2 to 5-3) Exactly right...the Colts losing the week before on a blocked punt by the L...

Re: Punter/Wide Receiver or Tight End combo
Pat Studstill WR/P, Det Lions 1961-67, LA Rams 1968-70, and a curtain call with the Patriots in 1972. He also returned punts and kickoffs. His best season was in 1966 where he caught 67 balls for the Lions including a record 99-yarder which can only be tied!
